Overview
Parameters in Analytics are used for addressing different user needs. They can be referenced inside any exploration (funnel, path, etc.) or a modeling artifact such as a derived column, a cohort, or a metric. Visualizations that utilize modeling artifact such as a derived columns can potentially utilize parameters both within the visualization as well as the underlying derived columns. In all, parameters are a highly versatile mechanism to fine-tune visualizations.
These parameters can be connected to your dashboards using parameter tiles and the values can be used inside the dashboard.
Parameters are available in the following explorations:
and in the following modeling artifacts:
Parameter types in Analytics
There are 4 different types of parameters that you can create in Analytics and they are listed below.
- Column Values
- Custom Values
- Time Range and
- Time Grain
Time Range and Time Grain parameters can only be created as dashboard parameter tiles.
Ways to create Parameters in Analytics
There are multiple ways to create Parameters inside Analytics and they are as follows:
- You can use the pull-out drawers that you can see on the left side of the window in all the explorations and model artifacts.

- Instead of using the pull-out drawer, you can also choose to create inline parameters using the Filters section in any exploration. Here's how you can do this.
-
- Navigate to any exploration, dashboard or model artifact and go to the Filters section.
- Here, move to the Parameters tab, type in the name of the parameter that you want to add in the search bar, and hit Enter.
- This will create a parameter in the background and automatically map it to a related column. You can see this within the pull-out drawer where you can configure your parameters.

Query filtering using Parameters
Query filtering using parameters is one of the most common use cases. In order to simplify this, Analytics now has a first-class UX to perform query filtering within dashboards. This will make sure users do not get confused between query filtering and parameter tile UX.
When users define a dashboard parameter tile, Analytics suggests all the parameters that are currently defined across all tiles in the dashboard and other parameter tiles.
While defining a new parameter in the context of a visualization tile, Analytics prompts the user to also specify default value(s) for that parameter so the visualization can be rendered immediately without further input from the end user.
