Building a Path Analysis

  • Updated

Here's how you can create a new path analysis on Analytics. As an example, let us create a path analysis to analyze user paths that begin from the website's home page. To create this example, we use the Flix app and the demo datasets within it. You can also see these examples inside the app.

  1. Click the "+" on the left panel and choose Paths.
  2. Give your path analysis a name, add a description (optional) and choose the folder you want to place it in.
  3. The next step is to set the measure for the path analysis. For the example, let us choose the Users dataset from the drop-down.
  4. Then, we configure the Paths module.
      1. First, we choose whether we want to track users paths Starting from, Ending at or Centered on a point.
      2. Then, choose the events that you want to perform path analysis for. First, select the focal event using the drop-down and then the other events using the selector in the Show paths including field. If you want to use a Timestamp instead of an Event, you can click the Timestamp button in this section.
      3. Then, choose Event Occurence. There are 3 options that you can choose from - for the first time in the time range, for the first time ever, or for the last time. For our example, we set it to for the first time in the time range, choose Home Page under Product Events as the focal event and in the Show paths including field, we select All Product Events. Each of these fields allow you to configure filters separately.

When you choose events for a path analysis, it would be ideal to set the 'From' event to a specific event rather than an entire event stream so that it will be visible in the path analysis making it easier to trace what happened before and after the event.

  1. Then, choose the label - here, we select event_type.
  2. The next step is to set the bound. Here, we set 0 steps before and 5 steps after within 1 day.
  3. Set the time grain to 30 days.
  4. Finally, click Run Exploration.
  5. Once all steps are done, click Save.

You can set multiple filters inside an event segmentation analysis. Whenever you create filters, you can reference parameters inside them to fine-tune your exploration. Learn more about parameters.
