Building a Retention Analysis

  • Updated

A Retention analysis is built by measuring retention using the specified conditions against the segments of actors and attributes for a given time frame.

As an example, let us create a retention analysis for Weekly Play Retention - this means that we will analyse the number of users who played content on the website during their first visit and then returned another time to perform the same action, on a weekly basis.

  1. Access the Explorations page on the left navigation panel.
  2. Select the Retention template.
  3. On the definition page, choose the preferred Measure. For the example, let us choose the Retention measure and the Users dataset.
  4. In the Events section, choose the event stream or event type in the Users who performed and and returned to perform fields using the drop-down. For the example, we choose the Play Content option under Product Events for both the fields.
  5. In the Segmentation section, click + Add Cohort under Performed by to include one or multiple segments in the analysis. Here, we add two cohorts:
    • Cohort 1 - All Users
    • Cohort 2 - We add a new cohort called Behavioural Cohort 1 to group users who shared website content in all time. To add a new cohort, click + New Cohort and set the condition. Click here for more information on Cohorts.
  6. Set the time grain as 12 weeks.
  7. On the Visualization pane, click Run Exploration to generate a Retention chart.
  8. Give a descriptive name to this analysis and save it.

You can set multiple filters inside a retention analysis. Whenever you create filters, you can reference parameters inside them to fine-tune your exploration. Learn more about parameters.
