Generate properties and templates from product data sheets in Optimizely Product Information Management

  • Updated

You can use a master product file to generate properties and product templates. This can save you time because you no longer need to manually conform your data to match the import format or create a custom ETL (extract transform load) tool to evaluate product data and generate the files. This method can also be useful when you want to add large sets of new products, such as if you’re growing through acquisition or adding new product lines.

The process allows you to choose whether to generate properties, templates, or both. As the PIM generates the files, it evaluates the data and displays warnings as appropriate. You can then review the generated files, make any necessary tweaks, and import the properties and templates.

Generate properties

Choose any columns in the spreadsheet that will be created as properties. The PIM evaluates the data for each column and determines which control type each property should use. For example, if all products have values of yes/no, then the PIM uses a toggle control type. If all products have a value with a date format, the PIM uses a date picker control type. After the file is generated, review any warnings and import the file using the property import process to create the properties.

  1. Go to Configure > Properties > Import > Generate Import File.
  2. Select your file.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select which columns to use for the properties or template.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Download once the system generates the file.

Generate product templates

Choose a column that represents the template in the product file. When generating the file, the PIM identifies properties that have product data with the same value for the selected column and includes those in the template. For example, all products in the same category will likely have data for the same properties. After the file is generated, review any warnings and import the file using the product template import process to create the templates.

  1. Go to Configure > Properties > Import > Generate Import File.
  2. Select your file.
  3. Select Product Template.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select which column represents the template in the product file.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Download once the system generates the file.
