The Solr search provider is controlled by the Ektron Solr Process Manager 2.0 Windows service. It is this service that starts and stops the Java processes associated with Solr, ManifoldCF, and the crawl database. When stopping the Ektron Solr Process Manager service, you will likely encounter a Windows service timeout error.
The elapsed time it takes to shutdown the Solr components typically exceeds the time permitted a Windows service to reach the desired state, for example, Stopped .
Shutting down Solr kicks off a process to compact the crawl database; the duration of which varies according to how much content has been crawled but can take from 10 to 20 minutes for sites with 200K items indexed.
When shutting down Solr:
- Open Task Manager.
- Verify that the 3 Java processes have exited. At this point, the status of the Ektron Solr Process Manager 2.0 service is Stopping , and the Start option is not available.
- Select the Ektron Solr Process Manager 2.0 service.
- Press the F5 key to refresh the status. This causes the Start option to appear.
- Click Start to launch the start-up processes. It takes at least one minute to complete the start sequence (even though the service status indicates Started ).
