Segmentation

  • Updated

The Segmentation section in Optimizely Analytics templates lets you segment reports by cohorts or attributes. You can use pre-saved definitions of cohorts or attributes for segmentation or define them inline as part of the report.

Segmentation using cohorts

The Segment by Cohort section lets you segment your results using cohorts. A Cohort is a subset of the dataset you chose for your exploration. It enables more advanced definitions, combining multiple property filters with behavioral filters.

For instance, you have a Users dataset with a record for each user and a Page Views dataset that logs each page view event per user. With this feature, you can define a cohort in the Users dataset to include only those users with 10 or more Page Views in the past week.

So, when you select a cohort in this section, you tell Analytics which category of users your segment draws from.

To add a cohort as a segment,

  1. Create or open any exploration template, go to the Segment by Cohort section, and click +.
  2. Choose a cohort from the drop-down list or add a new cohort inline by clicking New Cohort.
  3. Run the exploration and click Save.

Segmentation using attributes

To segment your analysis further, you can group events by individual attributes. An attribute is a column within a dataset that reflects a qualitative or categorical trait of the entity it represents.

When you add a property, Analytics applies it to all the events in your analysis and then groups your results by the property you choose – such as user country, subscription tier, or account status.

For example, if you select the subscription_tier property in the Subscriptions dataset and have four subscription tiers (Free, Standard, Premium, and Ads Plus), you see one line in the chart for each.

To add an attribute as a segment,

  1. Create or open any exploration template, go to the Group by Property section, and click +.
  2. Choose an attribute from the drop-down list and click Save.

When you perform segmentation, the section only displays join path-compatible suggestions in the drop-down list. Analytics displays the incompatible options in grey with a warning symbol.
