A tile is a child element of a dashboard in Optimizely Analytics that displays the results of an analytical computation (such as a chart) or acts as a control (such as a filter) that drives the results shown in the dashboard. You can add the following types of tiles to a dashboard:
Visualization tile
Dashboards have two types of visualization tiles: New Visualization and Existing Visualization. You can use these visualization tiles to create an exploration or select an existing one and add it directly to a dashboard.
Tile configuration
Click New Visualization to see the exploration templates.
Choose your preferred template to build an exploration and add it to your dashboard. For information about different exploration templates and how to use them to build analysis, see Explorations. Before using the visualization tile, ensure you have created Analytics datasets.
When you add a visualization tile, you can do the following:
- Drag and drop it to rearrange its position.
- Resize it to fit your dashboard layout.
- Hover over the tile to access additional options:
- Click Refresh to update the tile's data.
- Use More (⋮) to:
- Inspect the underlying SQL query.
- Open the exploration in an explorer.
- Edit, delete, or duplicate the tile.
The Dashboard example section shows some of these features.
Any exploration you build directly on the dashboard is exclusive to that dashboard and is not displayed on the explorations page. However, you can add explorations created on the explorations page to your dashboard. See the explorations and the dashboard example.
Adding an exploration to a dashboard creates a private copy, which does not change if you modify the original exploration.
Parameter tile
Parameter tiles let you modify the value of placeholder parameters used in the queries of linked visualization tiles on the dashboard. This functionality helps refine the dashboard results to display only the desired data.
For example, suppose your dashboard includes a visualization tile showing a metric's data and value over time. You can use a parameter tile to set the time range you want to view, such as toggling between Last seven days, Last 30 days, or Last one year. Additionally, parameter tiles let you adjust these filter values if you want to view data from your VIP Shoppers cohort. When you modify a parameter, the linked tiles automatically update to reflect the changes.
The following screenshot displays a dashboard with multiple highlighted parameter tiles.
Tile configuration
- Click + Add Tile and select Parameter.
- Click Unnamed Parameter and enter a Name.
- Add a Description.
- Select a Type for the parameter tile. The available parameter types are:
- Column values – Displays a drop-down list of column values from which you can select a single item at a time for the parameter.
- Custom values – Lets you customize values for the parameter.
- Time grain – Displays a time duration for the parameter (for example, six hours, one month, or one year).
- Time range – Displays the date and time range for the parameter. You can choose a relative time range, such as the last six hours.
For example, you can create a parameter called subscription tier:
- Add the Name and Description, and choose Column Values as the Type.
- Select subscription_tier for the Column, choose Single select as the Select Type, and select All as the Default value.
- Preview how the tile will display on the dashboard and set a default value to display in the selector.
- Link the visualization tiles on the dashboard to this parameter tile.
- Use the toggle next to each visualization tile to link or unlink the tile with the parameter tile. Alternatively, you can link or unlink visualizations in the dashboard using the Link All or Unlink All options. When you enable linking, selecting a value in the parameter tile modifies the value of any parameters used in the queries of the linked visualization tiles on the dashboard.
- Click Add to Dashboard.
The following image shows how the entire tile configuration should look:
When you have added the Parameter tile to the dashboard, you can adjust its size and position by dragging and dropping it to the desired location. You can also hover over the tile and click on Show linked tiles to highlight the linked visualization tiles on the dashboard. Use More (⋮) to edit, delete, or duplicate the tile. See the Dashboard Example section for some examples.
Text tile
A text tile lets you add blocks of text anywhere on the dashboard. You can add headings, row separators, descriptions, and more.
The following screenshot displays a dashboard with a highlighted text tile.
Tile configuration
- Click + Add Tile and select Text. This places the tile at the bottom of the dashboard.
- Click within the tile and type your text.
Highlight the text to display formatting options for paragraphs, headings, or code blocks. You can also apply bold, italics, underline, or strikethrough styles, add hyperlinks, change text into code, and align text to the left, right, or center. Additionally, you can customize font and background colors or format your text as bullet or numbered lists.
You can adjust the tile's size and position by dragging and dropping it. Hover over the tile and click More (⋮) to edit, delete, or duplicate the tile. See the Dashboard Example section for some examples.
Filter tile
Filter tiles on a dashboard help narrow down data in visualizations, making it easier to answer exploratory questions. For instance, to view results for a specific region, create a filter tile, define the region filter, and link relevant visualizations.
Tile configuration
- Click + Add Tile and select Filter.
- Use the following fields to configure the filter:
- Filter name – Provide a name.
- Description – Add a description.
- Condition – Set a condition, display name, and value. You can add multiple conditions and groups.
- Link or unlink visualizations and click Add to Dashboard.
- Click Save. This adds the tile at the bottom of the dashboard.
Cohort filter tile
Cohort filters let you narrow down data in a visualization using cohorts.
Tile configuration
- Click + Add Tile > Cohort Filter.
- Use the following fields to configure the filter:
- Filter name – Provide a name for your filter.
- Description – Add a description of the filter.
- Dataset – Select a dataset for your filter.
- Cohort – Choose the cohort to filter your results.
- Default values – Select the default value for your cohort.
- Link or unlink visualizations and click Add to Dashboard.
- Click Save. This adds the tile at the bottom of the dashboard.
Experiment tile
The experiment tile lets you add experiments to your dashboard.
Tile configuration
- Click + Add Tile > Experiment.
- Use the following fields to configure the filter:
- Filter name – Provide a name for your filter.
- Description – Add a description of the filter.
- Select an experiment in the Preview section and set the baseline and variation values.
- Link or unlink visualizations and click Add to Dashboard.
- Click Save. This adds the tile at the bottom of the dashboard.
