Personal files overview

Personal files give you a persistent document store in Optimizely Opal that agents access automatically during task execution. Upload files once and agents retrieve them within their scope without manual attachment in every conversation.

How personal files work

Opal scopes personal files to your account. Agents and Virtual Teammates, Opal's automated team members, use personal context to read your files automatically during task execution. Personal context is a setting you enable per agent. No per-conversation attachment is required.

Access personal files

To access your personal files, go to Context > Personal Files in Opal.

The Personal Files tab opens a browser-based editor where you create and manage text and markdown files without leaving Opal.

Create and edit files

Use the Personal Files editor to create and edit text and markdown files directly in Opal. Files you create in the Personal Files tab are available to agents configured with personal context access. See Manage personal files for step-by-step instructions.

Configure agents to use personal files

Agents access personal files automatically when you enable personal context. When the agent runs, Opal makes your context files available to it before it begins executing the task. These files include AGENTS.md and MEMORY.md.

Enable personal context for a specialized agent

The following steps require permission to create or edit specialized agents.

Select the Enable personal context option when creating or editing your specialized agent.

To enable personal context, complete the following steps:

  1. Create or edit a specialized agent.
  2. Select Enable personal context in the Input section.
  3. Click Save or Update to save the agent.
  4. (Optional) Follow the steps in the Limit agent access to a specific folder if you want to limit file access to a specific folder.

Limit agent access to a specific folder

By default, an agent with personal context enabled accesses your entire personal file store. Use the following steps to limit access to a specific folder:

  1. Open the agent settings. See Edit a specialized agent for steps.
  2. Enter the path for a specific folder to grant the agent access to in the Working directory field. For example, enter /context/agents/support.
  3. Click Update to save the agent.

The agent accesses only files within the specified path.
