Personal files in Optimizely Opal let you store documents, notes, and reference material that agents access automatically during task execution. Use this article to create, upload, edit, and organize files in the Personal Files tab.
The Personal Files tab
The Personal Files tab has two panels:
The Files panel lists your files and folders. The toolbar contains New file, New folder, and Search files. Select Select to act on several files and folders at once.
The editor displays when you select a file. Use the editor toolbar to Undo, Redo, Expand to full screen, and access More. Switch between the source and preview tabs to edit or review the rendered output.
Opal automatically generates and maintains some files, for example MEMORY.md. These files are read-only and display an information banner in the editor. Do not delete auto-generated files.
Create a file
Use New file to create a text or markdown file directly in Opal.
Click New file.
- Enter a name for the file.
- Click Add or press Enter.
Opal automatically opens the file. Enter your content and click Save.
Create a folder
Use New folder to organize your files into subfolders.
Click New folder.
- Enter a name for the folder.
- Click Add or press Enter.
Opal automatically adds a file named Untitled.md to the folder. Folders display in the file tree and collapse or expand when selected.
Upload files or a folder
Opal supports the following file types for upload:
.md,.txt.pdf.png,.jpg,.gif,.webp.xlsx,.csv.docx,.pptx
Upload from your local disk
To upload from your local disk, complete the following in the Files panel:
Click Drop files here to upload.
Select Upload files or Upload folder.
- Select the files or folder from your local disk.
Upload by drag and drop
To upload files or a folder by drag and drop, complete the following steps in the Files panel:
- Drag a file or folder from your local disk into the Files panel.
- Drop it onto the Drop files here to upload area.
Edit a file
Open any file in the editor to update its content.
- Select the file you want to edit in the Files panel.
Click Edit to enter edit mode.
- Make your changes.
Click Save.
To discard your changes, select Cancel instead.
Switch between the source and preview tabs to edit or review the rendered output at any time.
View version history
Opal saves versions of your files as you edit them. Use version history to review or restore a previous version.
- Select the file you want to view in the Files panel.
- Click More.
Select Version history.
View and restore version history in the following ways.
View and restore a version directly
Click a version to preview it. A banner displays, alerting you that you are viewing an earlier version.
- Click Restore version to restore that version. Your current version stays in history, so nothing is lost.
- Click Back to latest to return to the latest version.
View a version with More
Click More for a version to see additional options.
The following options display:
- View this version – Preview this version, with options to restore it or return to the latest version.
- Restore this version – Replace the current version with this one. Your current version stays in history, so nothing is lost.
- Compare with current – View this version with a rich diff between this version and the latest version. Select Restore this version or Back to latest from this view.
Rename a file or folder
Rename any file or folder from the context menu in the Files panel.
- Hover over the file or folder you want to rename.
Click More.
- Select Rename.
- Enter the new name.
- Press Enter.
Download a file
Download a copy of any file in one of five formats.
- In the Files panel, hover over the file.
- Click More.
- Select Download as.
- Select a format: Markdown (.md), Word (.docx), PDF (.pdf), Plain text (.txt), or Rich text (.rtf).
Select multiple files
Use multi-select to act on several files and folders at once. Select supports the following bulk operations:
- Move to folder – Moves the selected files to a folder.
- Download selected – Downloads the selected files.
- Delete selected – Permanently deletes the selected files.
To exit multi-select mode, click Done.
Delete a file or folder
Deletion is permanent. Deleted files are not recoverable. Download a copy or check version history before deleting a file you may need later.
Delete one file or folder
To delete files or folders, complete the following in the Files panel:
- Hover over the file or folder.
- Click More.
- Select Delete.
- Click Delete in the confirmation dialog.
Delete multiple files
To delete multiple files or folders at once, complete the following in the Files panel:
- Click Select.
- Select the checkboxes next to the files you want to delete.
- (Optional) Select Select all to select all files.
- Click Delete selected.
- Click Delete in the confirmation dialog.
Storage limit
Your storage limit depends on your subscription plan. The storage meter in the Files panel displays how much storage you have used.
Opal blocks new uploads when your storage limit is reached. Delete files you no longer need to free up space.
