Get started with Optimizely Opal for Admins

Optimizely Opal is an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant that helps you work smarter across Optimizely One. Optimizely Opal is automatically available and comes with pre-built instruction agents that you can enable and update based on your needs. Before using Opal, Admins must complete the following:

Prerequisites

  • You must use Opti ID to access Opal.
  • You must have generative AI enabled.

Add users and set permissions

Add and manage users and their permissions for Opal in the Opti ID Admin Center. See manage users for instructions.

You can give users the following access:

  • Opal Administrator – Ability to manage and configure agents in the Optimizely Opal app.
  • Opal User – Ability to use Optimizely Opal from individual Optimizely products, with access to Opal Chat within the Opal app and any connected Optimizely products.

Access the Optimizely Opal app

The Optimizely Opal app is the configuration dashboard for Opal, accessible through the product switcher in the global navigation.

  1. Log in to Optimizely.
  2. Select your org.
  3. Click Opal.
Opal is only available for United States-based customers for Optimizely Data Platform and OCP.

What displays in the Optimizely Opal app depends on your permissions levels. Users with Opal user permissions can use Optimizely Opal Chat, while Opal Administrators can manage connections and customize Opal.

Manage connections

You can connect Optimizely Opal to specific Optimizely products and instances. If a product instance is not connected, it does not have access to Opal features, so you must create the connection before you customize Opal. 

  1. Go to the Opal app > Connections.
  2. Click on a product to expand it.
  3. Select an instance to connect it to Opal. 
  4. Click Save.

Customize Opal

Although Optimizely Opal has many features that do not require configuration, you must instruct Optimizely Opal on approaching certain topics to tailor its output. This gives it some personality and increases its awareness of your brand tone of voice and your competitors.

Opal includes default instructions for generating content across formats, such as blog posts, social copy, suggestions, and help responses. These instructions act as reusable prompt frameworks, which you can tailor to your brand voice or content goals.

  • Enable pre-built instruction agents – See Optimizely Opal instruction agents for a list of pre-built instructions and a brief overview of what they do. To enable pre-built instructions, complete the following:
    1. Go to Opal app > Instructions.
    2. Click on an instruction. The details of the instruction display.
    3. Toggle on Active.

Turn Optimizely Opal on or off (Optional)

Optimizely Opal is enabled by default. To disable Optimizely Opal, complete the following:

  1. Go to the Opti ID Admin Center. 
  2. Go to Settings > Generative AI.
  3. Toggle Enable Gen AI off.

If you toggle Enable Gen AI off, you must contact Optimizely Support to re-enable it.
