Add bounce or exit rate metric to an experiment

You can configure bounce rate and exit rate metrics on pageview events and then add them to new or already-running experiments. See Bounce and exit rate metrics for information.

When you add bounce or exit rate metrics to a running experiment, they are calculated retroactively, back to the beginning of the experiment.

Add bounce rate or exit rate metric

The metrics module is in beta. Contact your Customer Success Manager or Optimizely Support for information.

Without the metrics module

  1. Select an experiment or campaign, or create one.
  2. Click Metrics.
  3. Select the pageview event you want to use as a metric.
  4. Select Decrease as the winning direction. Typically, the goal is to decrease bounce and exit rates by making your website more engaging.
  5. Select bounce rate or exit rate from the measurements drop-down list.
  6. Click Save to Experiment.
  7. Click Save.

With the metrics module

To create a one-time bounce rate or exit rate metric, complete the following:

You can only use one-time metrics in the current experiment or campaign. See the metrics module.
  1. Select an experiment or campaign, or create one.
  2. Click Metrics.
  3. Click Browse and select Create one-time metric.

  4. Select Page Event Metric for the Metric Type.
  5. (Optional) Enter a Name. If you do not enter a name, Web Experimentation creates one automatically. 
  6. (Optional) Enter a Description.
  7. Select the pageview event you want to use as a metric.
  8. Select Decrease as the winning direction. Typically, the goal is to decrease bounce and exit rates by making your website more engaging.
  9. Select bounce rate or exit rate from the measurements drop-down list.
  10. Click Save on the Create one-time Metric page.

  11. Click Save on the Metrics page.

To create a reusable bounce rate or exit rate metric, complete the following:

  1. Click Metrics.
  2. Click Create New Metric.

  3. Select Page Event Metric for the Metric Type.
  4. (Optional) Enter a Name. If you do not enter a name, Web Experimentation creates one automatically. 
    Cross-project metrics must be unique. See the Metric creation requirement section of the metrics module documentation for information.
  5. (Optional) Enter a Description.
  6. Select the pageview event you want to use as a metric.
  7. Select Decrease as the winning direction. Typically, the goal is to decrease bounce and exit rates by making your website more engaging.
  8. Select bounce rate or exit rate from the measurements drop-down list.
  9. (Optional) Select Cross-project metric to make the metric available across your Experimentation projects. 
  10. Click Save.
