Use the brand manager in Optimizely Opal to add the resources and guidance that make up a brand. Open a brand from the Context > Brand to work in the manager.
The brand manager includes the following pages:
- Overview – A summary of the brand, with a card for each populated area.
- Resources – The brand's assets, colors, and typefaces.
- Guidance – The rules for using the brand.
- History – The record of published versions.
The header displays the brand name and status. It provides also provides an option to export the brand as JSON and publish the brand. See Publish and use a brand.
Resources
Resources are the building blocks of the brand. They include, assets, colors, and typefaces.
Assets
Assets are the logos, photos, backgrounds, and templates in the brand. Add assets in one of the following ways:
- Upload them from your computer.
- Select them from the Optimizely Content Marketing Platform (CMP) library.
Colors
The Colors page displays the brand's palette. A table lists every managed color with its role and values.
To add a color, select Add color and complete the following fields:
- Name – A friendly name for the color, such as Lime Active.
- Role – A label for the color, such as Primary, Secondary, Accent, Neutral, Extended, or Do not use. Roles help you identify each color outside edit mode.
- HEX – The hex value. Opal computes the RGB value automatically.
- CMYK – The print color value.
- PMS – The Pantone Matching System (PMS) value.
- Accessible HEX – The color to pair with this one for accessible contrast.
You must enter at least one color value: HEX, CMYK, or PMS. Opal calculates the RGB value from the HEX.
Typefaces
The Typefaces page lists the brand's typefaces. Each typeface displays its name, licensing, a fallback font, and a specimen preview. Declare each typeface by name.
Guidance
The Guidance pages hold the rules for using the brand. They are the core of a brand, beyond its resources. Unlike the fixed Resources pages, guidance pages are dynamic. Opal creates them during extraction, or you add your own and title them yourself.
Guidance uses a consistent three-level structure so any rule fits:
- A page covers one area of the brand, such as brand foundations or voice and messaging.
- A section groups related rules within a page.
-
A rule is one instruction that Opal follows.
Edit a guidance page
To edit a page, click More > Edit domain from the guidance list or guidance details page.
The following are the options to update:
- Title – The name of the area, such as Illustration & AI.
- Description – What this part of the brand covers.
- Enabled – Whether the page is active. Disable a page to leave it out of the generated skill. This is helpful when you want to publish a brand while you are still working on the page.
- Notes – Context for editors. Opal does not receive authoring notes.

Add a section
Within a page, add a section to group related rules. A section has a Title, a Description, an Enabled toggle, and Authoring notes. Use Add sub-section to nest sections when a brand needs finer structure.
Disable a section to leave it out of the generated skill. This lets you publish a brand while a section is still in progress.
Add a rule
Within a section, add the rules that Opal follows:
- Label – A short name for the rule, such as Illustration style.
- Description – The instruction you want an agent to follow.
- Referenced resources – The exact colors, typefaces, and assets the rule applies to. Referencing a resource removes ambiguity, so Opal applies the specific color or typeface to rule names.
- Enabled – Whether the rule is active.
- Authoring notes – Context for editors, not sent to Opal.
Most people refine a brand that Opal generated rather than build every rule by hand.
