Understand your universal exploration analysis

  • Updated

The template consists of the following five modules:

Measure module

The measure module contains a + icon that lets you choose a measure to calculate for the selected events and segments. You can reorder the measures you add to the module using drag and drop.

The following measures are available in the template:

  • Aggregate – Aggregates a specific column.
  • Event Aggregate – Lets you use the measure portion of the event segmentation template anywhere else in the product. This includes other explorations, metrics, derived columns, and cohorts.
  • Metric – Adds a metric from the catalog or a custom block.
  • Formula – Lets you write custom logic using formulas.

Inside the measures module, you can enable period-over-period comparison for each measure by clicking the over time toggle next to Measure.

Segmentation module

This module lets you choose a cohort of actors, such as users, or one or more attributes to include in the analysis. It has two sub-sections: Segment by Cohort and Group by Property, which let you add cohorts and attributes. You can create a cohort by choosing an existing cohort from the drop-down list or using the + New Cohort option to create a behavioral cohort block in one click.

Filters module

You can use filters to narrow down data in a visualization. They make it easier for you to answer exploratory questions. For example, if you want to see results for a specific region, you can define a region filter and see the narrowed-down data.

Analytics also lets you choose JSON columns in this module. When you click a JSON column, it expands to display the available keys for that column. You can choose a key and click Apply. When this is done, the selected end key is chosen as the display name for that column.

Visualization module

The visualization module lets you run and view the analysis. It lets you edit visualizations, examine the underlying SQL query, and add the chart to a dashboard.

The following features are available in this module:

  • # and % – Lets you switch between numbers and percentage values on the chart.
  • Top 'N' segments – Lets you choose the number of top segments to display in the visualization.
  • Time Range and Time Grain – Lets you configure time range and time grain for the analysis.
  • Sampling – Lets you configure sampling and responses for the analysis.
  • Edit visualization (Other actions) – Lets you inspect a query, edit visualization, add an analysis to a dashboard, and download it as CSV.

Switch between numbers and percentages

These options let you switch the values on the Y-axis from absolute values to percentages and vice versa in one click. This feature is useful when dealing with multiple segments, as using absolute values lets you see a clearer breakdown of how many individuals are in each segment.

Time range and time grain

Time Range refers to the complete period during which events are considered for the analysis. Examples include the last two years or the time range between two specific dates. Time Grain refers to the granularity of analysis, such as Daily (1 day), Weekly (7 days), and so on.

You can set the time range using a simple drop-down list or even choose from the quick options and iterate through different choices of time range and time grain without leaving the chart. It is also possible to set a lag using the Ending option.

Sampling

In the visualization module, you can configure sampling modes for your exploration by clicking the lightning icon. The drop-down list displays two sampling modes: Enabled Faster Response or Enabled Higher Precision.

Edit visualization section

Clicking the three dots next to Sampling displays a drop-down list with four options: Inspect Query, Add to Dashboard, Edit visualization, and Download As.

  • Inspect Query – Opens a query inspector. It has three tabs: SQL, Warehouse SQL, and NetScript. You can change the SQL and NetScript queries by clicking the Open as SQL Explore and Open as NetScript Explore buttons in the respective sections.
  • Add to Dashboard – Add the exploration that you have created to a dashboard. You can choose from two options: Pick a dashboard or New Dashboard.
  • Edit visualization – Displays the chart settings with two sub-sections: Data and Style.
    • Data – Information about the X and Y axes, and lets you select and customize the data you want to display on the chart axis.
    • Style – You can configure the following:

      • Display legend – Control the display of the legend on the chart.
      • Legend position – Configure where you want to position the legend. The options available are Top, Bottom, Left, and Right.
      • Stacked chart – Enable this option if you want to see values for different categories stacked on top of each other within a single bar or along a single axis.
      • Compact layout – Create Sparklines to visualize trends across multiple measures with compact, in-line charts to spot patterns and gain insights at a glance.
      • Tooltip mode – Configure the tooltip position. The options available are Nearest, X-axis, Y-axis, and Index.

  • Download As – Download your analysis in CSV or EXCEL format. The column formatting is preserved for the downloaded files as well.
