Override SendGrid UTMs

  • Updated

An urchin tracking module (UTM) parameter is a code snippet added to the end of a URL to track campaign and content performance. You can use up to five variants of URL parameters (source, medium, campaign name, term, and content type). Your tracked dimensions display in your analytics reports and provide insights into your marketing performance.

Optimizely Data Platform (ODP) sets these parameters by default when creating and sending campaigns, which can be conflicting if you use ODP and SendGrid to send campaigns independently. To resolve this, you can attach UTM parameters when emailing directly through SendGrid.

Enable UTM override

If you see unexpected or duplicate UTM parameters, activate the default UTM override by completing the following:

  1. Go to Activations > Overview.
  2. Edit the campaign that includes your emails.
  3. Select Force override of SendGrid UTM parameters.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Deselect to let SendGrid attach UTM parameters.

If you deselect, multiple utm_campaign, tm_content, utm_medium, and utm_source parameters are included in your emails. Depending on your tools, duplicate parameters can complicate your analytics. For example, ODP takes the first UTM parameters it sees, while Google Analytics takes the last UTM parameters.
