Configure campaign enrollment

The terms audiences and segments are interchangeable. Optimizely has updated all segments to audiences in the Audiences page and is currently working on updating the UI in other pages. See Understand audiences to get information on audiences. 

When creating or editing a campaign, you can apply enrollment rules to customize your customer audiences and refine the campaign's audience. If the campaign has a series of touchpoints, Optimizely Data Platform (ODP) reapplies the enrollment rules for every touchpoint based on the current enrollment status. For example, if you use lists as an enrollment rule, ODP checks the membership to see if you updated the list each time before sending the next touchpoint.        

Configure enrollment

Email and SMS channels are legacy features and not offered to new customers.  
  1. Go to Activations > Overview.
  2. Create a campaign or select the campaign you want to edit.
  3. Expand Enrollment and edit an existing audience or create a standard or real-time audience.
  4. (Optional) Set additional enrollment rules.

Types of enrollment 

You can enroll customers in the following two ways, depending on the type of campaign:

  • Audience-based enrollment – Enroll customers by using a standard or real-time audience. Standard audiences are available for one-time and behavioral campaigns, while real-time audiences are available for web campaigns.
  • Event-based enrollment – Enroll customers who have triggered an event, like opening an email. Event-based enrollment is only available for behavioral campaigns.   

Audience-based enrollment

  1. Go to Activations > Overview.
  2. Edit or create a campaign.
  3. Expand Enrollment and select an audience.
    • For one-time campaigns – Select and edit an existing standard audience or click Create New Segment. For information on creating or editing standard audiences, see Create standard audiences.
    • For behavioral campaigns – Select Customers that match a segment, then repeat the steps for one-time campaigns.
    • For web campaigns – Select All Visitors or a real-time audience from the drop-down list. See Build real-time audiences in ODP for information on real-time audiences. 
  4. (Optional) Click Preview to see the estimated reachable audience.
  5. Click Apply to save your enrolled customers.
  6. (Optional) Adjust the Enrollment Rules for one-time and behavioral campaigns.

Event-based enrollment

Only available for behavioral campaigns.
  1. Go to Activations > Overview.
  2. Edit or create a campaign.
  3. Expand Enrollment > Customers that trigger an event.
  4. Select a filter from the Filter drop-down list. For information on creating filters, see Manage filters.
     
  5. Expand Automation Rules and define the number of messages the campaign sends to each person per hour.

Additional enrollment rules

You can apply additional enrollment rules for one-time and behavioral campaigns to refine your audience further. You can change the value of the underlined words by clicking on them.

  • Toggle Must have been active in the past 24 hours to enable it. You can change the values to select customers who have not been active within a defined time period.  
  • Toggle Must not have matched this campaign in the last 7 days to disable it. You can change the values to select customers who have either opened or clicked any campaign, this campaign group, campaign, or campaign group, within a defined time period. Click Add to add more enrollment rules.
  • Toggle Must be subscribed to (select) to enable it. You must select the subscription from the filter drop-down list.
